Paper Training

Paper training is also a highly effective method for housetraining a puppy. When you do it correctly, it will teach your puppy to eliminate on small papers or pads until he is mature enough to learn to use specific spots for his business. Paper training is excellent when your pup is still very young or finds it difficult to go outside. To paper train your puppy:

Create a confined space where your puppy can do his business unsupervised. This area can be puppy-proofed to keep him restricted, or you can just use his pen for that business.

Line the entire space with old newspapers or training pads. In the beginning, your puppy will go all over the space, but it will always be on the papers or pads.

Change the papers once they become soiled. Make it frequent.

Reduce the number of papers or pads that you keep in the confined area, so much so that there is a small area without any paper or pad. Because your pup has developed a habit of toileting on the areas with paper, he should subconsciously move to the areas where there are still papers over the floor, leaving the uncovered part clean.

By instinct, your puppy won’t like relieving himself near his eating or sleeping area; so, ensure that you remove the pads closest to his bed and bowls first.

Over the next couple of weeks, continue to remove the papers until there is only one left. Make sure the remaining paper is as far as possible from the bed and bowl, and change the paper frequently.

Use a specific word or phrase for cueing your puppy whenever he has to toilet or is toileting. Let him learn to associate the word with toileting. You can use something like “go potty.”

When you want to transition from paper to going outside, leave a partially soiled paper in an appropriate place outside. This will convince him to go outside.

Once he is completely okay with going outside, get rid of the papers and pads.
